This butterfly belongs to the family Lycaenidae of the order Lepidoptera of the class Insecta. It is found in Hokkaido, Honshu, and Shikoku, but not in Kyushu. Outside of Japan, it is found in the Korean Peninsula, northeastern China, and the Ussuri region. Its wingspan is about 40 millimeters. The base color of the wings is orange, and the underside has vertical black stripes arranged in a wavy pattern. Its Japanese name, "Uranami," comes from this characteristic. It appears once a year, from early to mid-June in warm regions, and from July to August in cold regions. Adults stay still on the leaves of their food plants during the day and do not fly unless startled, but at dusk males fly actively above the trees. The larvae feed on plants of the Fagaceae family, such as Quercus acutissima, Quercus serrata, Quercus crispulatus, Quercus dentata, and Quercus serrata. They overwinter as eggs.
