...During these winter and summer sailing seasons, caravans from Egypt, Syria, and other places gathered at ports in the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Peninsula, and Indian Ocean trade was closely linked to the Mediterranean world through caravans. A sewn ship with a triangular sail, called a dhow, had long been used in this Indian Ocean trade. This ship was made of teak and coconut wood from the west coast of the Indian Ocean and the Maldives, and had a unique structure in which the planks were sewn together using strings made from palm fiber instead of nails. The largest one according to medieval historical documents had a hull length of about 35 meters, could carry about 200 passengers, and had a cargo load of about 3 tons (according to research by Ieshima Hikoichi). ...
