A glacial lake that straddles the northern Italian region of Lombardy and the Swiss canton of Ticino. It is located on the southern slope of the Alps, roughly halfway between Lake Maggiore and Lake Como, and is surrounded by high mountains. Although it is not very large, it has an irregular shape and a circumference of 93 km. The scenic lakeside is home to tourist and health resorts such as Lugano, Melide, and Campione d'Italia. A railway line crosses almost the center of the lake. [Aichi Hagiwara] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
