Bernardino Luini

A painter of the Milanese school in Italy. He first studied under Bramantino, Bergognone, and Vincenzo Foppa, but around 1510 he was decisively influenced by Leonardo da Vinci, who was staying in Milan at the time, and in addition to Lombard-style naturalism, he mastered his teacher's chiaroscuro and sfumato techniques (painting objects with blurred boundaries, like smoke). He also absorbed the coloring techniques of the Venetian school through Andrea Solario, and showed a talent for oil painting as well as fresco painting, and from around 1520 he established his own elegant and lyrical style of painting. Although he did not reach the profound spirituality of Leonardo, he celebrated the classical style of the High Renaissance and was active in Milan and its surrounding areas. His representative works include the group of murals in the Villa Pelucca in Monza (now in the Brera Art Gallery in Milan), works for the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Lugano, the Madonna of the Roses in the Brera Art Gallery, and Saint Catherine in the Poldi Pezzoli Museum in Milan.

イタリア、ミラノ派の画家。初めブラマンティーノやベルゴニョーネ、ビンチェンツォ・フォッパらから学んだが、1510年ころ、当時ミラノに滞在中のレオナルド・ダ・ビンチから決定的影響を受け、ロンバルディア風の自然主義に加えて、師の明暗法やスフマート（煙のように、物の境界線をぼかして描く）の技法を修得した。またアンドレア・ソラリオを通じてベネチア派の彩色技法を吸収するとともに、油彩のほかフレスコ画に天分を発揮し、20年ころから独自の典雅で叙情的な画風を確立した。レオナルドの深い精神性には及ばないが、盛期ルネサンスの古典的様式を謳歌(おうか)し、ミラノとその周辺で活躍した。代表作に、モンツァのビラ・ペルッカの一群の壁画（現在ミラノのブレラ美術館に所蔵）、ルガノのサンタ・マリア・デリ・アンジェリ聖堂の諸作品、ブレラ美術館の『バラの聖母』、ミラノのポルディ・ペッツォーリ美術館の『聖カタリナ』など。
