Yanbu' (English spelling)

Japanese: ヤンボー（英語表記）Yanbu‘

A port city on the Red Coast in western Saudi Arabia, it has long been known as the gateway for pilgrims to the holy city of Medina. It is also called Yanbu. Currently, it is designated as one of the two major industrial model cities, along with Jubail on the Persian Gulf coast. The current population is around 10,000, but the city aims to have a population of 150,000 by the end of the 20th century, centered on petrochemical projects. A 1,207 km oil pipeline was completed from the east coast of the oil fields, and oil was exported from the west coast for the first time in 1981. This was in response to the need to reduce transportation costs to Europe and the US and the instability of the Persian Gulf coast.

サウジアラビア西部の紅海岸の港町で，古くから聖地メディナへの巡礼客の出入口として知られていた。ヤンブーとも呼ばれる。現在はペルシア湾岸のジュバイルと並んで，二大工業地帯のモデルに指定されている。現在の人口は1万程度であるが，石油化学プロジェクトを中心に20世紀末までに人口15万の都市化を目ざしている。油田地帯の東海岸から1207kmの送油管が完成，1981年に西海岸から初めて石油を輸出した。欧米向けの輸送コストの低減とペルシア湾岸の情勢不安に対応したものである。
