A series of paintings in which themes such as events, customs, and natural changes from the 12 months of the year are selected and arranged in the order of the months. They are often arranged on each fan or side of a folding screen or shoji screen. In the mid-Heian period (late 9th century to 10th century), folding screen and shoji paintings depicting Japanese landscapes and customs became popular in conjunction with waka poetry. Tsuki-no-e was the most important subject, and poems about the theme of each picture were written on shikishi-gata paper within the painting. The abundant subjects of Tsuki-no-e can be seen from the waka poems and legends included in contemporary poetry anthologies such as imperial anthologies and private anthologies. It is often used synonymously with Shiki-e. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
