A commercial and industrial city in the southern part of the North-West Frontier Province, Pakistan. Population 116,000 (1981). Founded in the 15th century, it was named after the military commander who built it. It is a strategic crossroads between the east-west route from the center of Punjab to Afghanistan via the Ghumar Pass in the Sulaiman Mountains, and the north-south route along the west bank of the Indus River, and is a crossing point for crossing the river, making it a strategically important point and a trading center.
