Dera Ismāīl Khan

A commercial and industrial city in the southern part of the North-West Frontier Province, Pakistan. Population 116,000 (1981). Founded in the 15th century, it was named after the military commander who built it. Facing the west bank of the Indus River, it is connected to the opposite bank by ferry during the rainy season when the water level rises, and by a floating bridge with boats lined up in the dry season. It is a strategic crossroads between the east-west route from the center of Punjab to Afghanistan via the Ghumar Pass in the Sulaiman Mountains, and the north-south route along the west bank of the Indus River, and is a crossing point for crossing the river, making it a strategically important point and a trading center.

パキスタン，北西辺境州南部の商工業都市。人口11万6000(1981)。15世紀に建設され，地名は建設者の武将にちなむ。インダス川西岸に面し，雨季の増水時にはフェリーで，また乾季には舟を並べた浮橋で対岸と結ばれる。パンジャーブ中心部からスライマーン山脈中のグマル峠を経てアフガニスタンへ至る東西交通路と，インダス川西岸沿いの南北交通路との十字路で，かつ同川の渡河点という軍事的要衝を占め，交易の中心としても栄えてきた。
