Zonal structure

A discontinuous banded structure formed by differences in physical and chemical properties from the center to the periphery of a single mineral crystal. It is generally observed in minerals that form a wide range of solid solutions (such as plagioclase and garnet). It occurs when, during the process of crystallization or recrystallization, a part of the crystal or an existing crystal is removed from the reaction system or does not reach sufficient equilibrium. In the case of crystals crystallized from magma, the composition usually changes from the center to the periphery, where the composition is stable at lower temperatures. In the case of recrystallization due to metamorphism, the periphery usually shows a composition that is stable at higher temperatures, and this is called reverse zoning. The study of zoning is important in investigating the geological and geochemical processes that took place at that time.

単一の鉱物結晶が，中心部から周縁部に向って，物理化学的諸性質の違いによってつくる不連続的な縞状の構造。一般に幅広い固溶体を形成する鉱物 (たとえば斜長石，柘榴石など) 中で観察される。結晶晶出あるいは再結晶の過程で，既晶出の部分あるいは既存の結晶が，反応系から取除かれたり十分平衡に到達しない場合に生じる。マグマから晶出した結晶の場合は，普通，中心部から周縁部に向って，より低温で安定な組成へと変化する。変成作用による再結晶の場合には周縁部のほうが，より高温で安定な組成を示すのが普通で，逆累帯構造と呼ばれる。累帯構造の研究は，そのとき行われた地学的，地球化学的過程を追究するうえで重要である。
