An important battle during the War of Succession, which was fought over the succession of the empire after the death of Alexander the Great. Generals such as Cassander (Macedonia), Ptolemy I (Egypt), and Lysimachus (Thrace), who were trying to divide the empire, united to oppose Antigonus I, who was officially recognized as succeeding to command of the imperial army in an agreement in 321 BC, in his attempt to unify the empire. In 301 BC, a battle was fought at Ipsos in Phrygia, central Asia Minor, in which Antigonus was defeated and killed.
