Japanese: 輪転機 - りんてんき

A printing press with a cylindrical platen and an impression cylinder that presses the paper against it, as opposed to a circular press with a flat platen. There are rotary presses for each printing method: letterpress, offset printing, and gravure printing. They are suited to printing newspapers, magazines, and other items that require high speed mass production. F. König invented a high-speed rotary press in 1811, and The Times of London manufactured a newspaper rotary press in 1866. In Japan, a press made by the French company Marinoni was introduced to the Asahi Shimbun Company and other companies in 1890. An offset rotary press was also created by the German company Vomag in 1912, and became popular in Japan in the 1970s.

平盤の版面をもつ円圧式印刷機に対し，円筒状になっている版面と，これに紙を押しつける圧胴が相対した構造の印刷機。凸版，オフセット印刷，グラビア印刷の各印刷方式にそれぞれ輪転機がある。高速度で大量生産を必要とする新聞，雑誌等の印刷に向いている。1811年にF.ケーニヒが高速輪転機を発明，1866年にはロンドンのタイムズ社が新聞輪転機を製作した。日本にも1890年にフランスのマリノニ社製のものが朝日新聞社などに導入された。また，1912年にドイツのフォマーク社でオフセット輪転機が作成され，日本では1970年代に普及した。
