An electronic component that uses elastic waves that propagate along the surface of a solid. It mainly uses Rayleigh waves, the same as earthquakes. Surface acoustic waves are excited and received using interdigital electrodes formed on a piezoelectric substrate, utilizing the piezoelectric effect. The wavelength of a surface acoustic wave is about ^10-5 times that of an electromagnetic wave, making the element dimensions very small. Application elements include filters, delay elements, and resonators, and are characterized by their small size, lack of adjustment, and low cost. They are used in TV receivers and various communication devices.
