A Latin Father of the ancient Christian Church. Bishop of Carthage. He was originally a pagan, but converted to Christianity around 246 and became a priest, and was elected bishop in 248. During the persecution of Christians by Emperor Decius in 250, he hid himself near Carthage and led the church through letters. Many Christians apostatized during the persecution, which caused many problems for him after his return. He looked up to the Latin Father Tertullian as his teacher, and his strict stance led him to conflict with Pope Stephen I (reigned 254-257), especially regarding the validity of baptism for heretics. In 257, during a new persecution by Emperor Valerianus (reigned 253-260), he was banished for refusing to worship paganism, and a year later he was brought back to Carthage and martyred by beheading.
