Kapp-Putsch

Kapp-Putsch

In March 1920, an anti-republican coup was planned in Berlin by the reactionary politician Wolfgang Kapp (1858-1922) and General von Lüttwitz, commander of the First Corps of the Wehrmacht. They opposed the reduction of military forces under the Treaty of Versailles, and on the 13th of that month, they occupied Berlin with the Erhard Marine Corps, which was to be disbanded, and declared the establishment of a new government. The Weimar Republic government asked the Wehrmacht for cooperation, but was refused, so they fled to Dresden and then Stuttgart. The labor unions resisted Kapp with a general strike, and the Democratic Party also cooperated, so the right-wing parties and the Wehrmacht abandoned Kapp, and the putsch failed on the 17th. However, the putsch highlighted the weakness of the republic and the significance of the Wehrmacht, leaving a major political impact.
