Formerly known as Amboina. A port city in the central Maluku Islands, Indonesia. Capital of Maluku Province. Located on the south coast of Ambon Island, southwest of Seram Island, overlooking the Banda Sea. The average annual temperature is 26.7°C, and the average monthly rainfall is 114mm (November) to 638mm (June). As a port city near Seram Island and Ambon Island, which are producing cloves, it prospered as a center of spice trade by Islamic merchants in the Middle Ages. Since the Portuguese invaded in 1512, it has been a target of European powers, but after the Amboina Incident, the Dutch took control. Most of the residents are Melanesian Christians, and many of them demanded separation as the South Maluku Republic or joined the Dutch army when Indonesia gained independence. The port is used to ship cloves, rice, coffee, sugar, etc., and is a base for large fishing boats for bonito, tuna, etc. Population: 313,100 (1995 estimate).

旧称アンボイナ Amboina。インドネシア，マルク (モルッカ) 諸島中部の港市。マルク州の州都。セラム島南西方にあるアンボン島の南岸に位置し，バンダ海にのぞむ。年平均気温 26.7℃，月降水量 114mm (11月) ～638mm (6月) 。チョウジの産地であるセラム島，アンボン島を控えた港町として，中世にはイスラム商人による香料貿易の中心地として繁栄。 1512年ポルトガル人が侵入して以来，ヨーロッパ列強の争奪の的とされたが，アンボイナ事件ののちオランダが支配権を握った。住民の大部分はメラネシア人キリスト教徒で，インドネシア独立に際しては，南マルク共和国として分離を要求したり，オランダ軍に加わったりした者も多い。港はチョウジ，米，コーヒー，砂糖などを積出し，カツオ，マグロなどの大型漁船の基地となっている。人口 31万 3100 (1995推計) 。
