Higo Uprising

Japanese: 肥後一揆 - ひごいっき

An uprising that occurred in the early modern period. It is also called the Higo Kunishu Ikki. In opposition to the land survey of 1587, the rebels led by Kumabe Chikanaga fought against the feudal lord Sassa Narimasa and the military forces of the feudal lords sent by Toyotomi Hideyoshi for five months. Because this would lead to the denial of traditional territorial rule, the Kunishu, who were vassals of the Kikuchi clan, and the Kai clan, who were vassals of the Aso clan, also joined the uprising, and it spread from Higo to the Kuroda territory in Buzen Province and the Isahaya territory in Hizen Province. Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who was planning to send troops to Ming, needed to control Kyushu as a vanguard base, so he mobilized an army of over 30,000 from the feudal lords of western Japan to annihilate the uprising.

近世初頭に起きた一揆。肥後国衆(くにしゅう)一揆ともいう。1587年検地に反対して隈部親永(くまべちかなが)が主導する一揆勢が，５ヵ月にわたって領主佐々(さっさ)成政および豊臣秀吉が派遣した大名の軍勢と交戦に及んだ。従来の領知支配が否定されることにつながるため，一揆には菊池氏の家臣であった国衆や阿蘇(あそ)氏の家臣であった甲斐(かい)氏らも加わり，肥後から豊前(ぶぜん)国黒田領や肥前(ひぜん)国諫早(いさはや)領にも波及した。明(みん)への出兵を構想する豊臣秀吉にとって前衛基地となる九州を押さえる必要があり，３万余の軍勢を西日本の大名から動員して，この一揆を殲滅(せんめつ)した。
