A form of comics that was born in connection with newspapers. RF Outcault (1863-1923) started out by drawing single-panel cartoons, but in 1894 he began serializing "Hougang Alley" in the New York newspaper The World. The main character, a bald boy who always wears pajamas, rampages through the slums of New York. His ferocious vitality made him popular, and the newspaper's circulation increased. He was nicknamed the "Yellow Kid" because the printer used the wrong yellow ink, and he was eventually bought by the Hearst group of newspapers. This led to the term "yellow journalism" being used to describe newspapers that sell flashy articles. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
