Ginou Shrine

...During the great famine of 1732 (Kyoho 17), a farmer from Tsutsui, Sakubei, starved to death with stored wheat seeds as his pillow in order to save some for sowing the following year, and was praised as a righteous farmer. In 1776 (An'ei 5), Matsudaira Sadashige, the lord of Matsuyama, erected a gravestone for Sakubei, and in 1881 it was enshrined as Gino Shrine. From the Meiji period to the early Showa period, peddling of ceramics and processed seafood products was popular, and sales routes extended as far as mainland China. ...
