Luge - luge (English spelling)

Athletes ride a sled lying on their backs and slide down the ice course, competing for speed. Luge is a French word meaning "wooden sled." Luge has been an official event since the 9th Winter Olympics in Innsbruck (Austria) in 1964.

At the start, the rider sits on the luge sled and pushes the start handle (handle set at the starting point) with momentum, then immediately paddles (pushes the ice with both hands) several times, then immediately turns over on his back, stretches his toes, and starts sliding. While sliding, he maintains a horizontal, back-facing position, sliding down to minimize air resistance. The sled has no brakes or steering handles, and instead, riders grip the tip of a wooden part called a kuhé (the base where the blades are attached) between their feet, and slide down by pushing at key points. The maximum speed varies depending on the track (raceway), but at the Vancouver track in Canada, riders can reach speeds of over 150 kilometers per hour from the men's starting position.

Generally, heavier athletes have an advantage, and athletes are allowed to wear weights called "load weights" according to their weight. In addition, the competition is conducted according to various rules, such as a regulation to measure the temperature of the sled blades at the start (if the temperature exceeds a certain level, the athlete is disqualified).

Luge, which developed from sledding, is divided into artificial tracks and natural tracks, depending on the course used. There are differences in the course design and the sleds used. The artificial tracks used in the Winter Olympics have piping that carries a coolant through the track. Artificial tracks are around 1,300 meters long (around 1,000 meters for women's two-man luge) and have an elevation difference of about 100 meters.

At the Winter Olympics, there are events for men's singles, women's singles, two-seater, and team relay (team competition). Team relay was introduced at the 2014 Sochi Games (Russia), and the next runner starts immediately after the previous runner finishes, and competes in teams of three sleds. Since it is a relay of three sleds, it is a very thrilling event.

選手がそりに背面仰臥(ぎょうが)姿勢（あおむけ）の滑走フォームで乗り込み、足先から氷上コースを滑走し、その速さを競い合う競技。リュージュlugeとは、フランス語で「木製そり」を意味することばである。リュージュ競技は、1964年の第9回冬季オリンピック・インスブルック大会（オーストリア）から正式競技として採用されている。

　スタート時は、リュージュそりに座った状態で、反動をつけてスタートハンドル（スタート地点に設置されている握り手）を押し、直後にパドリング（両手で氷上をかく）動作を数度行った後に、すぐさまにあおむけの姿勢をとり、つまさきを伸ばして滑走していく。滑走中も、そのままあおむけの水平姿勢をとり、空気抵抗を少なくするようにして滑り降りる。そりにブレーキや操作用のハンドルはなく、両足で木製のクーヘとよばれる部分（刃をつける土台）の先端を挟み、要所で押し込むように操作しながら滑走する。最高速度は、トラック（競走路）によって違いがあるが、カナダのバンクーバートラックの場合、男子スタート位置からは時速150キロメートル以上にも達する。

　一般に体重が重いほうが有利であり、選手は負荷重量とよばれる「おもり」をその体重に応じて装着することが許される。このほか、スタート時のそりの刃の温度計測規定（所定の温度を超えると失格になる）など、さまざまなルールに従って競技が進行される。

　そり遊びから発展してきたリュージュ競技には、その使用コースによって、人工凍結コースartificial trackと天然トラックコースnatural trackがある。それぞれに、コース設計や使用するそりなどに違いがみられる。冬季オリンピック大会に採用されているのは、トラックに冷却剤を通すパイピング工事を施した人工凍結コースである。人工凍結コースにおいては、全長1300メートル前後（女子、2人乗りは1000メートル前後）、標高差100メートルほどのコースとなっている。

　冬季オリンピック大会では、男子1人乗り、女子1人乗り、2人乗り、チームリレー（団体戦）の種目が行われる。チームリレーは、2014年のソチ大会（ロシア）から採用され、前走者がフィニッシュした直後に次の滑走者がスタートするもので、3台1チームとなって競技する。3台のそりがリレーしていく形式になるので、たいへんスリリングな競技となっている。
