King of Macedonia. Reigned 276-239 BC. Grandson of Antigonus I. The meaning of the title "Gonatas" is unknown. Born to Demetrius I and the daughter of Antipater. After his grandfather and father's power was defeated in 301 BC, he lay low in Greece, and in 277 BC, he defeated the Celts who had invaded the Balkans and established the Antigonid dynasty. His statement that "kingship is honorable hard labor" suggests his association with Stoic philosophers. [Inoue Hajime]
