Nagasaki Magistrate - Nagasaki Daikan

In early modern times, this local official had jurisdiction over Nagasaki and the surrounding areas. At the end of the 16th century, Toyotomi Hideyoshi appointed Nabeshima Naoshige as the magistrate. This position was later divided between the Nagasaki magistrate and the magistrate. Nagasaki townsman Murayama Toan was appointed as the magistrate. The Edo Shogunate also appointed Toan, and then the wealthy merchant Suetsugu Heizo family (four generations), and for a time the Nagasaki town elders held the position concurrently, but after being re-established in 1739, the town elders Takagi Sakuemon family held the position hereditarily until the end of the Edo period. They belonged to the Finance Magistrate, and procured imported goods (official supplies) required by the Shogunate with the annual tax collected from Nagasaki and the surrounding directly controlled territories (said to have controlled 160,000 koku at its peak). In the late Edo period, they received 100 bales of rice and 45 kan of silver.

近世，長崎と周辺地を管轄した地方官。16世紀末，豊臣秀吉が鍋島直茂(なおしげ)を代官に任命。この職掌はのち長崎奉行と代官が分掌。代官には長崎町人村山等安(とうあん)が就任。江戸幕府も等安，そのあと豪商末次平蔵家（４代）を起用，一時長崎町年寄が事務を兼官したが，1739年再置後は町年寄高木作右衛門家が幕末まで世襲。勘定奉行に属し，長崎と周辺直轄地（盛時には16万石を管したという）から徴収した年貢で幕府所要の輸入品（御用物）を調達。江戸後期には米100俵・銀45貫を受ける。
