Lysimachos

[Died] c. 281 BC. Ancient Macedonian general and king. He was a military aide to Alexander III (the Great) during his campaign in Asia, and was one of the "Diadochi" (successors) of Alexander when the satrapies (provincial governors) were divided after Alexander's death in 323 BC. He was preoccupied for many years with pacifying the native peoples of his territory, and was hardly involved in the conflicts between the other successors in Greece and Asia. Finally, in 302 BC, he became one of the most powerful men as one of the successors and leader of the coalition to overthrow Antigonus I, and the following year he defeated and killed Antigonus at the Battle of Ipsus. With this victory, he annexed most of Asia Minor to his own European territories, and consolidated his power in both regions against the oppression of Antigonus' son Demetrius I. In 285 BC, he drove Demetrius out of Macedonia, who had invaded the country in 294 BC. His later years were unfortunate, and he had his own son executed as a result of a conspiracy by his third wife, Arsinoe II. Taking advantage of the confusion that followed, the Seleucid king Seleucus I of Syria invaded Asia Minor, and Lysimachus was killed in battle at Corupedium in Lydia in 281 BC.
