The English word gymnastics can be traced back to the Greek word gymnastikē. The word is derived from gymnos, meaning "nude," and has been used since the 5th century BCE, because the ancient Greeks had the habit of competing naked. Therefore, for the ancient Greeks, gymnastics meant "competing naked," but it came to mean more positively "the field of scientifically examining the effects of exercise in relation to sleep, nutrition, massage, etc., and systematizing exercise."
