Deinokratēs (English spelling)

A Greek architect from the 4th century BCE. He is thought to have been from Rhodes or Macedonia. He worked under Alexander the Great and was responsible for planning the Egyptian seaport city of Alexandria, and written descriptions remain of his grand scheme, including city walls, streets, buildings, and canals. He is also said to have designed the Second Temple of Artemis at Ephesus. Many other designs are also written about that are said to be his, but no remains remain. He is said to have devised a fantastic plan to build a gigantic bust of Alexander the Great on Mount Athos as its base.

前4世紀のギリシア時代の建築家。ロドス島またはマケドニアの出身と考えられる。アレクサンドロス大王のもとで活躍し，エジプトの海港都市アレクサンドリアの都市計画を担当，市壁，街路，建造物，運河などを含む大規模な構想を示す記述が残されている。またエフェソスのアルテミス第2神殿も彼の作とされる。ほかにも彼の設計とされるものが多数記述されているがその遺構は残っていない。アトス山を土台にしてアレクサンドロス大王の巨大な胸像を造ろうという幻想的なプランを立てたと伝えられている。
