A temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect (formerly the Sanron sect) located in Daian-ji, Nara City. The principal image is the Eleven-Headed Kannon Bodhisattva. It is also called Nandai-ji or O-tera. It began as Baekje Dai-ji Temple, built on the banks of the Baekje River in 639, and in 674 was moved to the current Asuka village and called Takechi Dai-ji Temple. A nine-story pagoda was built and the name was changed to Daikan O-tera. It was moved to Heijo-kyo in 717, and remodeled by the monk Doji in 729 as Daian-ji Temple. It is one of the Seven Great Temples of Nara. It was given special protection by Emperor Shomu, but fell into decline due to frequent fires, and today only one hall remains. The former grounds of Daian-ji Temple (historic site) are the ruins. Several Buddhist statues known as Daian-ji style from the end of the Tenpyo period are preserved here. → Related topics Lucky items | Lucky temples and shrines | Taian [town] | Daikandaiji Temple Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
