1879‐1943 Finnish forest scientist and politician. As a professor at the University of Helsinki, he conducted research on forest conservation. His theory on forest classification is well known, but he also participated closely in national politics shortly after independence. He served as a member of parliament from 1929, and after serving as leader of the Progress Party's parliamentary group, he became prime minister in a coalition government of the Progress Party, Farmers Party, and Social Democrats under President Kyösti Kallio of the Farmers Party in 1937. He achieved success in domestic politics, including the enactment of the National Pension Act and the Language Act on Universities, which brought an end to the linguistic struggle between Finnish and Swedish.
