…In the 10th century, the city was granted to the Count of Canossa by the Church, and in the 12th century it became a city-state ruled by a consul elected by the citizens. In 1167, it joined the Lombard League of Cities, which opposed Emperor Frederick I. Like other Italian cities of the time, the city was dominated by aristocrats divided into supporters of the Pope and the Emperor, and in 1267, the Este family established themselves as Signores, under whom the city prospered. In particular, Ercole I (reigned 1471-97), along with his father Borso, became famous throughout Europe as a patron of the Renaissance culture of the time. Poets such as Boiardo, Ariosto, and Tasso frequented his court, and a unique style of painting, known as the Ferrara School, emerged. …
