John Emerich Edward Dalberg-Acton, 1st Baron Acton of Aldenham

British historian. Born January 10th in Naples, Italy. After studying history at the University of Munich in Germany, he settled in England in 1858. He served as a member of the House of Commons (1859-1865) and was created a baron in 1869. A representative of liberal Catholics, he strongly criticized the doctrine of papal infallibility. In 1895, he succeeded Seely as professor of the Regius Chair of Modern History at Cambridge University. Although his term of office was only seven years, he firmly believed in the possibility of a purely objective "definitive history" that everyone could agree on, and left a great impact on the academic world. The Cambridge Modern History series, which he edited, was the concrete result of that belief, but he himself fell ill before its publication and died on June 19th, 1902. The series was published posthumously.
