A lacquer artist from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. Born in Asakusa, Edo. Commonly known as Genjiro. At the age of 12, he became an apprentice to Takei Tosuke, the master carpenter of the Tokugawa Shogunate's workshop, Koami Inaba Choken, and trained in lacquer art. In 1850, he became independent, taking the name Heiemon and the name Ichisho. Before the Meiji Restoration, he worked as a lacquer artist in the Shogunate's palace, and in 1861, he was involved in the wedding furnishings for Princess Kazunomiya. After the Meiji Restoration, he was active in expositions both in Japan and abroad, including exhibiting "Maki-e Bookcase with Twelve Views of Mt. Fuji" at the Vienna World Exposition in 1873, winning the Flower Pattern Award at the 1st Domestic Industrial Exposition, the Skillful Technique Award at the 2nd Domestic Industrial Exposition, and the Honorary Grand Prize at the Paris World Exposition in 1900. He also worked for the Imperial Household Ministry, and became an Imperial Household Artist in 1929, and a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (Tokyo University of the Arts) in 1930. Ichisho was the last maki-e artist to correctly convey the Koami school, and his representative work was the Imperial treasure "Chrysanthemum maki-e mother-of-pearl bookshelf," which took 10 years to complete. He was buried at Myoko-ji Temple in Karasuyama, Tokyo. <References> Hirokazu Arakawa and Tokugo Uchida, "Modern Japanese Lacquer Crafts," Tokyo Famous Craftsmen's Guide, compiled by the Tokyo Prefectural Industrial Promotion Department
