Grass - Shiba

Japanese: 芝 - しば
Grass - Shiba

A district in the eastern part of Minato Ward, Tokyo, and the former name of the ward. The name comes from Shibaura (the beach where shiba grass grows). Formerly the coast of Tokyo Bay, the area covered a wide area from Shinbashi in the north to Takanawa in the south, and was formerly Shiba Ward until it was merged with the former wards of Akasaka and Azabu in 1947 (Showa 22) to become Minato Ward. The area is currently near JR Yamanote and Keihin Tohoku Line Tamachi Stations, and Toei Subway Mita and Asakusa Line Mita Stations. Zojoji Temple, founded in Kaizuka (now Chiyoda Ward) in 1393 (Meitoku 4), became the family temple of the Tokugawa family in 1590 (Tensho 18), and flourished as a large temple after moving to its current location in 1598 (Keicho 3). Part of the temple grounds became Shiba Park, and Tokyo Tower stands in one corner. Shiba Daijingu Shrine in Shiba Daimon was the great birth deity for the townspeople of Edo.

This comprehensive radio tower was completed in 1958 (Showa 33). It stands 333 meters tall, which is said to be the height necessary to transmit radio waves throughout the Kanto region. The special observation deck, located 250 meters above ground, was used for work and maintenance from the time of construction, but was opened to the public in 1968 and has since been used as an observation facility.
