The smallest carnivorous mammal of the Felidae family in the Western Hemisphere (illustration). It is found in Chile, Chiloé Island, and western Argentina. Body length is 39-52 cm, tail length 17-23 cm. The ears have rounded tips, are black on the back with a white spot in the middle, and the black spots on the body resemble those of wildcats such as those of Tsushima Island, but the body and limbs are short and stocky, and the tail has many black horizontal bands that extend to the base. The body is yellowish brown to gray brown with dense small, round black spots measuring 1 cm or less in diameter, and the underside is almost white. 西半球でもっとも小型の食肉目ネコ科の哺乳類(イラスト)。チリ,チロエ島およびアルゼンチン西部に分布する。体長39~52cm,尾長17~23cm。耳介は先が丸く,その後面が黒く中央に白斑があり,体に黒色の斑点があるところは対馬などのヤマネコに似るが,胴と四肢が短くずんぐりしていて,尾に黒色の横帯が基部近くまでたくさんある。体は黄褐色~灰褐色で直径1cm,またはそれ以下の小さくて丸い黒色の斑点が密にあり,下面は白色に近い。
