The smallest carnivorous mammal of the Felidae family in the Western Hemisphere (illustration). It is found in Chile, Chiloé Island, and western Argentina. Body length is 39-52 cm, tail length 17-23 cm. The ears have rounded tips, are black on the back with a white spot in the middle, and the black spots on the body resemble those of wildcats such as those of Tsushima Island, but the body and limbs are short and stocky, and the tail has many black horizontal bands that extend to the base. The body is yellowish brown to gray brown with dense small, round black spots measuring 1 cm or less in diameter, and the underside is almost white.
