Argentina (English spelling)

Spanish female dancer. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her real name was Antonia Mercé. She captivated audiences with her delicate, noble and humorous performances, and is said to have given birth to the Renaissance of Spanish dance. She was more famous in Paris than in Spain, and mainly danced modern Spanish music such as Falla's "Au voie le magique," Albéniz and Granados, but did not dance flamenco. She came to Japan in 1929 (Showa 4). Currently, the Argentina Memorial is located in Monaco.

スペインの女流舞踊家。アルゼンチンのブエノス・アイレス生まれ。本名Antonia Mercé。繊細で高貴、しかもユーモアあふれる演技で観客を魅了し、スペイン舞踊のルネサンスを生んだといわれる。スペインよりもパリで有名で、ファリャの『恋は魔術師』、アルベニス、グラナドスなどのスペイン近代音楽をおもに踊り、フラメンコは踊らなかった。1929年（昭和4）来日。現在モナコにアルヘンチーナ記念館がある。
