Megatherium
A representative fossil genus of the family Megatheridae of the order Rodentia. A large herbivore with bony platelets in its skin. It has a low, long skull and strong jaw arches. Its teeth are tubular. Its limbs are sturdy, with prehensile forelimbs and plantigrade hindlimbs with sharp claws, and it walks by bending the tips of its forelimbs. It has been found in Cenozoic strata in South America and Pleistocene strata in North America. Its body length is about 6m.
