BaS (169.39). It is obtained by passing an equimolar mixture of hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen through barium carbonate heated to about 1000 °C. Colorless cubic crystal. Density 4.25 g cm -3 (15 °C). Melting point 2200 °C. It is oxidized in air to produce barium thiosulfate. It also absorbs water and carbon dioxide to produce hydrogen sulfide. When water is added, it is hydrolyzed to produce barium hydrogen sulfide and barium hydroxide. It dissolves in acid to produce hydrogen sulfide. It is insoluble in ethanol. It is used to manufacture the white pigment lithopone. It is also used in fluorescent paints because it fluoresces when it contains traces of other heavy metals. Other polysulfides include barium trisulfide BaS 3 [CAS 12231-01-5] (yellow crystals, decomposes at 400 °C, easily soluble in water) and barium tetrasulfide (light red, orthorhombic columnar crystals, decomposes at 200 °C, easily soluble in water). A mixture of these (called barium sulfide flower) is used as an insecticide and a depilatory for leather. Toxic. BaS(169.39).
