A branch of the Atsuta Daigūji family of the Southern Fujiwara clan. At the end of the 11th century, Fujiwara Suenori was given the position of Atsuta Daigūji by his maternal grandfather, Owari Inshōki, and afterwards, the position was passed from the Owari clan to the Fujiwara clan as hereditary, and was inherited by the descendants of Suenori's children Noritada, Noritada, and Noritada. Among them, the Chiaki clan began when Noritada's son, Noritomo (real name Arinori, later changed his name to Nobutsuna), took the name Chiaki. The title is said to have originated from the place name of Shitara County, Mikawa Province. Noritomo was a judge for the Hachijō-in Imperial Court and is said to have also served in Kamakura, and was also appointed governor of Suruga Province, which was a fief of the shogunate.
