Three types of compounds of bismuth and sulfur are known:
[Bismuth monosulfide]
Chemical formula: BiS. It can be obtained by passing hydrogen sulfide through water containing bismuth monoxide (BiO), or by heating and reacting BiO with dry hydrogen sulfide in carbon dioxide. It is a black or gray powder. Specific gravity: 7.29-7.8. Melting point: 680-685°C. When heated in air, it decomposes, releasing sulfur dioxide. When placed in hydrochloric acid, it decomposes, liberating bismuth.
[Dibismuth trisulfide]
Its chemical formula is Bi ₂ S ₃ . It occurs naturally as pyroxene.

［一硫化ビスマス］
　化学式BiS。一酸化ビスマスBiOを含む水中に硫化水素を通ずるか，二酸化炭素中でBiOと乾燥硫化水素を加熱して反応させると得られる。黒色ないし灰色の粉末。比重7.29～7.8。融点680～685℃。空気中で加熱すると二酸化硫黄を発生して分解する。塩酸に入れるとビスマスを遊離して分解する。
［三硫化二ビスマス］
　化学式Bi₂S₃。天然に輝ソウ鉛鉱として産する。
