Three types of compounds of bismuth and sulfur are known: [Bismuth monosulfide] Chemical formula: BiS. It can be obtained by passing hydrogen sulfide through water containing bismuth monoxide (BiO), or by heating and reacting BiO with dry hydrogen sulfide in carbon dioxide. It is a black or gray powder. Specific gravity: 7.29-7.8. Melting point: 680-685°C. When heated in air, it decomposes, releasing sulfur dioxide. When placed in hydrochloric acid, it decomposes, liberating bismuth. [Dibismuth trisulfide] Its chemical formula is Bi 2 S 3 . It occurs naturally as pyroxene.
