Born: 1857 [Died] Xuantong 1 (1909) A Chinese novelist in the late Qing Dynasty. Born in Dantu (Zhenjiang City), Jiangsu Province. His name was Tieyun. He initially tried to become a doctor and then worked in business, but failed. He then set his sights on politics, becoming close to important figures and making a great contribution to flood control when the Yellow River burst its banks in 1888. He then tried to introduce foreign capital for railway construction and mine development, but was accused of buying government rice from the Russian army and selling it to refugees during the Boxer Rebellion. He was exiled to Xinjiang, where he died. He wrote a colloquial novel, Lao Can Travels, about the incidents a man named Lao Can encounters while traveling around Shandong, and he sharply pointed out the crimes of government officials mismanaging the country. He was also known for collecting oracle bones, and wrote Tieyun Cang Turtle (1903), which marked the beginning of research into oracle bone script.
