Shoeworm (Mecopoda nipponensis)

Japanese: クツワムシ(轡虫) - クツワムシ（英語表記）Mecopoda nipponensis

An insect of the Tettigoniidae family in the Orthoptera order (illustration). One of the insects that sing in autumn, males raise their hind wings slightly at night and make a loud, noisy noise like "gacha gacha" (or "kasha kasha"). The name comes from the fact that the sound sounds like the sound of a horse's bridle. It is commonly known as "gacha gacha." It is distributed from the Kanto region to Kyushu, and lives in tall grasslands near forests. Its body length is around 35 mm. The length to the wing tip is 50 to 70 mm. There are green and brown types of body color, but even the green type has a brownish sound organ.

直翅目キリギリス科の昆虫（イラスト）。秋の鳴く虫の一つで，雄は夜間，後翅を少しあげてガチャガチャ(あるいはカシャカシャ)というように大きくやかましい音を立てて鳴く。この音が，あたかもウマの口にはませる〈くつわ〉の鳴る音のようであるところからこの名が出た。俗称ガチャガチャ。関東地方より九州にかけて分布し，林近くの背の高い草原にすむ。体長35mm内外。翅端までの長さは50～70mm。体色には緑色型と褐色型とがあるが，緑色型のものでも発音器の部分は褐色がかる。
