There are five known compounds of chromium and sulfur: [Chromium(II) sulfide] Chemical formula: CrS. It can be obtained by reacting anhydrous chromium(II) chloride with hydrogen sulfide at 600°C, or by mixing metallic chromium and sulfur in a 1:1 ratio and heating for a long time at 1000°C in a vacuum . It can also be obtained by reacting a mixture of chromium and aluminum with hydrogen sulfide to produce Al2CrS4 , which is then reacted with nitric acid to produce black crystals. It is a black-gray powder that forms hexagonal columnar crystals. Its melting point is 1550°C (decomposition begins at 1350°C). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
