A village located in the southwest of Amami Oshima, Oshima District, Kagoshima Prefecture. Population: 2,424 (1995). Yakiuchi Bay indents the bay from west to east, and is surrounded by steep mountains on three sides, north, south, and east. Settlements are scattered on the small flat areas along the shore of Yakiuchi Bay. The bay is relatively deep, and Edateku Island, lying at the mouth of the bay, acts as a natural breakwater and serves as an evacuation site during typhoons. Oshima Tsumugi and wood chips are the main industries, and agriculture is centered on sugar cane, with efforts being made to cultivate citrus fruits such as ponkan and ornamental plants.
