River basin sewerage system

Japanese: 流域下水道 - りゅういきげすいどう

A sewerage system is established for the purpose of treating sewage on a wide scale for each river basin in order to cope with the expansion of urban areas. According to the Sewerage Law, it is a system that mainly covers two or more cities and towns in a prefecture and receives and treats sewage discharged from sewers managed by local governments. It is implemented nationwide in the vicinity of large metropolitan areas such as Tokyo and Osaka, but some are planned mainly around industrial complexes, and technical studies are being conducted to prevent the occurrence of new pollution problems regarding the construction of treatment plants and pollution treatment. In addition, comprehensive plans for sewerage development by river basin are being implemented in various places in order to achieve and maintain environmental standards for public water areas, and 73 places had formulated such plans by 1990.

都市圏の拡大に対処するため，河川流域ごとに広域的に下水処理をする目的で設置される下水道。下水道法によれば，主として都道府県が2つ以上の市町村にわたり，地方公共団体が管理する下水道から排除される下水を，受けて処理する下水道であるとしている。全国的に，東京，大阪など大都市圏の周辺で実施されているが，工場団地を中心に計画されているものもあり，処理場建設，汚濁処理をめぐって，新たな公害問題の発生を防止するため，技術的検討が行われている。また公共用水域の環境基準を達成，維持するため，流域別下水道整備総合計画が各地で進められており，1990年までに 73ヵ所が策定している。
