Bahā' al-Din Naqshband (English spelling)

...The group was founded by Abd al-Khāliq Ghujduwānī (?-1179/80, also said to have died in 1220) and was active in Bukhara since the latter half of the 12th century. It was generally known as the Khoja sect, but when Bahā' al-Din Naqshband (1317-89) appeared in the 14th century, it came to be called the Naqshbandi sect after him. Its doctrine and training methods were strictly Sunni and Shari'a, and it aimed to become one with God through mental zikr by silent recitation. It prohibited the training methods seen in other sects, such as sama (a training method in which one enters a state of ecstasy while listening to music, etc.), wandering, and living alone, and instead aimed to reach a high religious state by training the inner mind while interacting with the people.
