The delightful protagonist of the masterpiece The Three Musketeers (1844) by the French novelist Alexandre Dumas (père). A hot-blooded man from Gascony, he is described as "an 18-year-old Don Quixote." He also plays an important role in the sequels Twenty Years Later and The Viscount de Brageronne. The story was inspired by Courtil de Cenderes' historical novel The Mémoires of D'Artagnan (1700).
