Kaiping

Japanese: 開平 - かいへい

A city in the south-central part of Guangdong Province, China. It is famous for its villages with many high-rise buildings. The buildings are also called Chinese Western-style buildings, and have a unique architectural style that combines Western European design from the 19th century to the early 20th century with traditional Chinese housing styles. They were built with the wealth accumulated by Chinese immigrants to the United States and Canada, who needed a large number of laborers due to the construction of transcontinental railroads and cities in the great development of the North American continent in the late 19th century, and the economic development in the early 20th century. The political instability from the end of the Qing Dynasty to the 1930s, which led to the rampant use of bandits and thieves in this region, is said to have been one of the reasons why high-rise buildings with strong defensive walls were needed. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2007.
