Large-leaved willow (Oobayanagi) - Oobayanagi (English spelling) Toisusu urbaniana (Seemen) Kimura
A deciduous tall tree of the Salicaceae family that grows on gravel along gentle rivers in the temperate zone of Hokkaido and north of central Honshu (illustration). It is one of the representative plants of Hokkaido's riverside forests. The scientific name, Toisusu , is taken from the Ainu name for the tree, with toy meaning grave and susu meaning willow. The trunk is upright and can reach a height of 20m. The bark is gray-brown and splits vertically. The leaves are oblong, 10-20cm long, with fine sawtooth edges and powdery white undersides. There are 5-8mm long stipules at the base of the petiole.
