Spanish female politician. Known by the nickname La Passionaria (the Passion Flower). Born into a working-class family in the Basque Country, she participated in the labor movement at a young age. After serving in the Socialist Party, she joined the Communist Party at its founding in 1921. In 1932 she became a member of the party's central committee, and was one of the leaders in the formation of the Anti-Fascist United Front, and later the Spanish Popular Front. She was elected to parliament in the 1936 general election, and gave an impassioned speech in parliament just before the country's eruption to civil war. During the civil war, she promoted slogans such as "It is better to die standing than to live on your knees," and inspired and led the Republican government forces, but after Franco's victory in 1939 she went into exile in Moscow.

スペインの女性政治家。ラ･パッショナリア(受難華)の異名で知られる。バスク地方の労働者の家庭に生まれ，若くして労働運動に参加。社会党を経て，1921年，共産党創設と同時に入党。32年には党中央委員となり，反ファシスト統一戦線，のちにスペイン人民戦線の結成を指導する一人となる。36年総選挙で国会議員に選出され，内戦突入寸前の国会で熱弁をふるう。内戦中にも〈ひざまずいて生きるより立って死ぬ方がましだ〉などのスローガンを掲げ，共和国政府軍を鼓舞，指導したが，39年フランコの勝利を機にモスクワへ亡命。
