1895‐1989 Spanish female politician. Known by the nickname La Passionaria (the Passion Flower). Born into a working-class family in the Basque Country, she participated in the labor movement at a young age. After serving in the Socialist Party, she joined the Communist Party at its founding in 1921. In 1932 she became a member of the party's central committee, and was one of the leaders in the formation of the Anti-Fascist United Front, and later the Spanish Popular Front. She was elected to parliament in the 1936 general election, and gave an impassioned speech in parliament just before the country's eruption to civil war. During the civil war, she promoted slogans such as "It is better to die standing than to live on your knees," and inspired and led the Republican government forces, but after Franco's victory in 1939 she went into exile in Moscow.
