Born: April 22, 1880, La Ciotat
[Died] July 4, 1958. Paris. French legal scholar. From 1906 to 1918, he was a professor at his alma mater, the University of Aix-en-Provence, and then transferred to the University of Paris, where from 1920 to 1949 he was in charge of civil law and then commercial law, succeeding M. Planiolle. He was later nominated for the presidency of the French Academy and honorary president of the French Society of Maritime Law. Ripert became widely known for his Maritime Law (2 vols., 1913) and Commercial Law (48), but he also wrote other works, including The Moral Law of Civil Obligations (25), Democracy and Modern Civil Law (35), Legal Aspects of Modern Capitalism (35), The Decline of Law (49), and The Forces that Create Law (55).

フランスの法学者。 1906~18年母校エクスアン=プロバンス大学教授,その後パリ大学に転じ,20~49年 M.プラニオールの跡を継いで民法講座を,次いで商法講座をも担当。その後,フランス学士院会長,フランス海法会名誉会長などに推された。リペールの名が広く知られるようになったのは『海法綱要』 Traité de droit maritime (2巻,1913) ,『商法綱要』 Traité de droit commercial (48) によるが,そのほか『民事債務における道徳律』 La règle morale dans les obligations civiles (25) ,『民主制と近代民法』 Le régime démocratique et le droit civil moderne (35) ,『近代資本主義の法的側面』 Les aspects juridiques du capitalisme moderne (35) ,『法の衰退』 Le déclin du droit (49) ,『法を創造する諸力』 Les forces créatrices du droit (55) などがある。
