Yoshida Ippo

Japanese: 吉田一保 - よしだ・いっぽう
Yoshida Ippo
Year of death: 1779
Year of birth: Unknown. A lecturer in Osaka in the mid-Edo period. Also known as Rinkodo Ippo-ko. He lectured on military books at a temple school in Mitsudera Nishi-cho, Shimanouchi (Osaka City) and was known for his eloquence. As he took the surname Yoshida, it is said that he also lectured on Shinto, Yoshida Shinto. He boasted a wide range of plays, and his book "Wakan Gunsho Yoran," which gave a broad overview of Japanese and Chinese military books, was reprinted many times over. The kabuki play "Iga-goe Nori-kake Kappa" (first performed in Osaka) by Nakagawa Kamesuke, which was based on his lecture on revenge stories, became very popular. It seems that there was a second generation of performers around the Kyowa period (1801-04), and his disciple Yoshida Tenzan was also famous. <References> Nakamura Yukihiko, "Yoshida Ippo, the Founder of the Revival of Osaka Kodan" ("Nakamura Yukihiko Writings", Volume 10)
