A term used in psychology and psychiatry. A sudden reaction caused by a certain situation or experience, accompanied by an outburst of strong emotions. It is an impulsive, excited state accompanied by movement, and can sometimes be accompanied by a clouding of consciousness. It shows intensity that is not commensurate with the cause. It is a direct reaction that is not processed or inhibited by the personality, and is likely to be seen in people with personalities or ages whose mental development is immature, or in situations such as pathological intoxication due to alcohol or panic.
