[raw]? Died September 24, 366. Pope of the Roman Empire (reigned 352-366). He worked hard to maintain the spirit of the Council of Nicaea against the forces of Arianism's revival. In order to protect Athanasius, he urged Emperor Constantius II to hold a council, but the emperor held the Council of Arles in 355 and condemned Athanasius. He refused to sign the decision and was exiled, and Felix II became the antipope. A few years later, he compromised and returned to Rome.
