The capital of Lipetsk Oblast in western Russia. It is located about 370 km south-southeast of Moscow, overlooking the Voronezh River, a tributary of the Don River. It was founded by Peter the Great in 1703 and developed into a center of iron metallurgy. The steelworks (1897, 1934) were expanded into a large-scale factory performing integrated pig steel processing in the 1960s. It is the center of industry in the region, utilizing iron ore from the Kursk Anomaly (a magnetic anomaly area centered on Kursk Oblast) and coal from the Donets coalfields. Other industries include machinery (tractors, radiators), chemicals (pharmaceuticals), food, and cement. There is a pedagogical university. It is located north of Voronezh, and is connected by rail and highway. Population: 508,124 (2010).
